Migratory shorebirds are too often disturbed  by vehicle, dogs and people when resting in flocks at the high water’s edge, which is a management issue if these remarkable shorebirds are to continue their epic migration to Roebuck Bay. © Jan van der Kam

A management planning achievement for 2005, was a Shorebird Disturbance Project on the northern shores of Roebuck Bay.  The monitoring of disturbance was coordinated by the Broome Bird Observatory with Yawuru Traditional Owners and the Roebuck Bay Working Group.

Management recommendations from the Project resulted in practical management recommendations to reduce disturbance that is most debilitating, when shorebirds are roosting at high water on the Bay’s northern shores. The birds need rest on high tide roosts to build fat reserves for their epic migration to the northern hemisphere, a truly remarkable event that should be observed at a distance!
