The Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest featured 25 short films made by local filmmakers.The popular Film Fest featured footage from Roebuck Bay and the
Kimberley coast, and was sponsored by Cygnet Bay Pearls, Sobrane Simcock, State NRM through Royalties for Regions, Inspiring Australia and Rangelands NRM through the National Landcare Program.
Australian actor Steve Bastoni provided filmmaking / acting workshops with Film Fest Co-Director Shayne Thomson which paid off, with lots of entries from emerging filmmakers. MC Greg Quicke, aka #spacegandalf after appearances on Stargazing Live was a drawcard, along with Sobrane Simcock who painted a dancing brolga which she donated for silent auction, raising $1800 for the 2019 Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest.

As you will read, we have plenty going on that you can get involved in – a Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest on August 5, 2017. If you are a filmmaker and wish to get involved, please do, but remember, the short films are due in on July 15, 2017. The Roebuck Bay Working Group also runs a Science on the Broome Coast series. Check out the presentations coming up and come along, they are all free events and you will discover a lot about Roebuck Bay and the Kimberley coast.

The focus the 2017 Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest is Roebuck Bay and the Kimberley coast – with this wild seascape providing enough drama and visuals for an outstanding screening on August 5, 2017, under the stars at The Mangrove Hotel in Broome. Filmmakers of any level are encouraged to submit a short film up to five minutes in length.

Grab your family, a picnic rug or camp chair and celebrate what makes Roebuck Bay the richest known intertidal mudflat in the world! At this FREE community event see up-close amazing pictures of the animals of the mudflats, what the scientists and young people of Broome have discovered in the mud, and how they translated this into art. This will be followed by a free re-screening of the Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest provided by Roebuck Bay Working Group.

Due to popular demand, the short films made for the inaugural 2015 MUD AND SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST, will be shown at Tanami Park, Broome North on Saturday May 21, 2016.
The FREE event starts at 5.00pm, so bring a picnic and rug and enjoy sitting under the stars and watching 17 outstanding short films made by Indigenous, Professional and local filmmakers about Broome’s saltwater country. The Azuki food van will be there for people who wish to purchase a meal. The event starts with a Yawuru Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, following by a series of outstanding photos of Broome’s coastal waters, then the short films.
The Roebuck Bay MUD & SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST is funded by Rangelands NRM through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, LandCorp and Inspiring Australia.

Gardens for Broome’s saltwater country is a new short film that focuses on the remarkable life in Roebuck Bay. THis wonderful film also sends a positive message about what our community can do to keep these coastal waters productive and clean so all life can thrive. The film was premiered at the inaugural 2015 MUD AND SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST in Broome during the Shinju Matsuri Festival. The film was made by Mark Jones, with aerial footage by Shayne Thomson for the Roebuck Bay Working Group. Viewers are warned that the film has images and voices of a deceased person. Thank you Rangelands NRM for funding this outstanding short film through funding from the Federal Government Landcare Programme.

‘Textures of days past’ is the Best Overall Short Film” in the inaugural 2015 Roebuck Bay MUD AND SALTWATER SHORT FILM FEST (Sep 2015). Creative and respectful, the short film features Judith Gray, an artist in Broome who draws inspiration from the natural and historical elements of Roebuck Bay and the Kimberley. The aim of the short film festival in Broome is to celebrate Roebuck Bay and encourage community and visitors to admire and take part in protecting the bay’s extraordinary natural, cultural and heritage values. RBWG invites short film entries for the 2016 MUD AND SALTWATER SHORT FILM FEST. If in need of filmmaking help, free workshops will be held early in 2016. Roebuck Bay Working Group invites filmmakers of any level to submit a short film (any length to 5 minutes including credits) with a focus on Roebuck Bay. To help rec filmmakers edit their films, a FREE workshop is on June 15, 6-8pm, Lotteries House. Entries close for short films on Friday July 31, 2015. Roebuck Bay MUD & SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST is funded by Rangelands NRM through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, and Inspiring Australia.
Roebuck Bay Working Group is comprised of Traditional Owners and government, local community, conservation groups and business. We work collaboratively to solve issues, raise awareness and encourage research and monitoring which supports responsible management and protection of Roebuck Bay.
