Dr Scott Whiting, Principal Research Scientist with Parks and Wildlife together with a Yawuru Ranger, will share their knowledge about the turtles of Roebuck Bay and the Kimberley coast and their reproduction.
Free event: Gold coin donations welcome.
Science on Broome Coast is sponsored by Inspiring Australia, Yawuru Land and Sea Unit, WA Marine Science Institution, University of Notre Dame, Department of Parks and Wildlife, Rangelands NRM through funding from the Federal Government Landcare Program.
This innovative science series is put on by Roebuck Bay Working Group and the Yawuru Land and Sea Unit.

There has been so much positive, heart warming feedback from community and visitors about our Broome’s first Roebuck Bay Mud and Saltwater Short Film Fest. Special thanks to:

A first for the coastal town of Broome in this year’s popular Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl, is the Roebuck Bay Working Groups’ short film festival to be held on the 3rd of September. The Mangrove Hotel, with its sea eagle view of Roebuck Bay is the picturesque location for the FREE Roebuck Bay MUD AND SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST.
Roebuck Bay Working Group Project Manager, Kandy Curran, said the films that have been received for the festival are of a high standard and exceptionally diverse. These include films with mock interviews with Roebuck Bay’s marine life, Yawuru Rangers showing how they look after Yawuru country, stories of the bay’s multicultural history, whacky footage of mud dwellers, underwater footage of dolphins and out of water experiences with humpback whales, cyclone surfing, a cultural story told through the eyes of a young girl and the dilemma of whether to fish with a best friend or go to the movies with a dream girl.
The ROEBUCK BAY MUD AND SALTwater SHORT FILM FEST is an initiative of the Roebuck Bay Working Group and is funded by Inspiring Australia and Rangelands NRM.

ROEBUCK BAY has the richest biodiversity of any tropical mudflat in the world. Each month mud samples are taken at two sites in the bay. These samples are full of marine invertebrates known as “benthos” that are sorted and identified in a laboratory at the Broome Bird Observatory. Long term monthly sampling enables monitoring of changes in invertebrate abundance in Roebuck Bay. If you want to help monitor the invertebrates that fatten up shorebirds for their annual migration, well here are the dates and details for you.

Love dolphins and dugongs and love being out on the water? Well here is your chance to contribute by uploading photos and sightings of dolphins and dugongs in near shore waters along the Kimberley coast to a dedicated website? The Roebuck Bay Working Group has developed these wonderful cards that illustrate so beautifully, coastal projects being run by scientists such as Dr Deb Thiele and PhD researcher Alex Brown, that are in need of volunteer help.

Want to be a volunteer who helps keep Roebuck Bay and its remarkable coastline clean – well you can do this by joining a local group that has a ball picking up rubbish and making Broome a healthy and happy place for people and marine life.

If you enjoy mud and volunteering in scientific projects on Roebuck Bay, there is a benthos (things in mud that birds eat) research project that needs volunteers from Aug 30-Sep 20. Contact Tanya: tanyajcompton@yahoo.com.au
Researcher Dr Tanya Compton
Project Description Use fine-scale sampling to identify how benthic species are distributed with respect to themselves, each other and functional traits across the tropical tidal flat of Roebuck Bay.
Team Marc Lavaleye, Tanya Compton, Micha Rijkenberg, Grant Pearson. Most sampling conducted by foot, with the exception of hard to reach and difficult sampling locations in Roebuck Bay i.e. Crab Creek and Bush Point.
Project Funders University of Groningen, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Bennelongia Environmental Consultants.

Roebuck Bay Working Group’s shorebird experts, Chris Hassell and Adrian Boyle are on the shores of Bohai in China along with Matt Slaymaker and Ginny Chan. As in previous years, the primary aim of their trip is to scan the shorebirds that are passing through on their migration to their northern breeding grounds. To read about their fascinating adventures, the challenges the birds and scientists face on mudflats that are being industrialised, and their sightings, read their regular reports »
Roebuck Bay Working Group is comprised of Traditional Owners and government, local community, conservation groups and business. We work collaboratively to solve issues, raise awareness and encourage research and monitoring which supports responsible management and protection of Roebuck Bay.
